Vegetable Oil - Pure Plant Oil (PPO) or Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO)

The other alternative is to use pure vegetable oil in a vehicle that has been suitably adapted. This involves the installation of a kit or components to allow the combustion of filtered and pre-heated vegetable oil. Over the years there has been a lot of research, discussion and debate regarding the reliability of PPO/SVO as an alternative fuel, especially in modern engines. Not forgetting that Rudolf Diesels high compression ‘diesel’ engine first ran on vegetable oil, it was in 1973 following the first oil shock, that the German company Elsbett, released a 3 cylinder, direct injection engine designed to run on pure vegetable oil. More than 1000 vegetable oil engines were built and installed in vehicles, but with the decline in the crude oil price, there was a corresponding decline in vegetable oil as a fuel. However, in the last 20 years there has been renewed interest in vegetable oil and following collaborative research and exhaustive trial work, a standard was released DIN V 51605 ‘For the use of Rapeseed oil as a fuel’.

In 2007 at the Agritechnica Fair in Hannover, Deutz was awarded a silver medal for their Natural Fuel Engine and is the first company to start manufacturing diesel engines that are factory fitted and warranted for use with PPO that meets the new standard.  Other companies such as John Deere are following suit with their own research and development programs.

Since the introduction of the standard, continual refinement and adjustment of the various parameters have seen a marked improvement in engine performance and reliability.
